My name is Daniel Herbertson and I’m a photographer.

I followed my passion of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts from Geelong, Australia to Japan – the world’s mecca for the sport. I first got into photography through MMA. As a fan and practitioner of the sport, I would post photos that I took at fights and in the gym to the Internet and quickly I gained the attention of the editors of ESPN affiliate Sherdog.com. I was soon recruited to be Sherdog’s correspondent for the Kansai area and later promoted to head photographer in Tokyo – the most active place for MMA in the world.

Aside from Sherdog, I have done assignments for and been featured in some of the greatest news agencies, magazines and clothing companies in the business including Sports Illustrated.com, ESPN.com, FOX TV, Fighters Only Magazine, Manto Fight Wear and Japanese publications such as Sports Navi and Kakutougi Tsushin.

What attracted me to photographing the fight world was not a fascination with violence or a simple meshing of two hobbies but the moments that seem to occur only in a ring or cage. The flash of fear in a fighters eye that is instantly replaced with supreme confidence as he makes his way to the ring. The faces natural reaction to pain before it is replaced with a poker face. Joy that can’t be contained and the sadness of defeat captured in the same frame.
